Stena Line considers using battery power in its fleet

Stena Line has signed a contract with Callenberg Technology Group for batteries with a capacity of 1 MWh to be installed on Stena Jutlandica, which operates between Gothenburg and Frederikshavn. The vessel will start using battery power in port before summer.

The battery project is planned to be completed in stages. In the first stage, battery power will be used for bow thrusters and manoeuvring when berthing in port. In stage two, battery power will also be used to drive the propellers, giving the Stena Jutlandica a range of around 10 nautical miles on electricity. In stage three, battery capacity will be expanded and the vessel will be able to cover about 50 nautical miles – the distance between Gothenburg and Frederikshavn – on electricity.
