Sweden condemned
The European Court of Justice (ECJ) has condemned Sweden for having exceeded EU air quality limits on PM10 in three areas including Stockholm and Gothenburg. Sweden has said it will take additional measures to comply. According to Sweden, the pollution is restricted to large roads with heavy traffic in a number of urban areas and is mainly due to the use of studded winter tyres. Issued on 10 May, the court ruling follows infringement proceedings launched by the EU executive in February 2009.
